PROGRESSIVE METAL

A Progressive Rock Sub-genre

From Progarchives.com, the ultimate progressive rock music website

Progressive Metal definition

This category represents the core movement of what is called "Progressive Metal" in the literal sense. It is a subgenre of progressive rock as much as it is a subgenre of heavy metal, and this is how its sound is defined: a blend of heavy, guitar-oriented metal music enriched with compositional innovation and complex arrangements, usually expressed through diverse instrumentation and often (but not always) with odd-time signatures. Common, but not essential to define the movement, are the frequent use of keyboards, high-pitched vocals, concept lyrical themes and tracks of longer duration. Similar to progressive rock, progressive metal draws influences from other genres, such as jazz/fusion, ethnic, classical and symphonic music.

The Origins:
The heavy sound of some of the progressive rock bands of the 70's has been one of the building blocks on which progressive metal was raised. Progressive rock pioneers such as KING CRIMSON and RUSH have often been acclaimed as the main influences of progressive metal bands. The other major influence has been the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) movement, and especially the twin-guitar arrangements of IRON MAIDEN, which have left their stamp on the early stages of the genre's development.

The Pioneers:
Often (and not unjustifiably) referred to as the "Big Three" of progressive metal, QUEENSRYCHE, FATES WARNING and DREAM THEATER have set the scene of what was to follow in the movement. The defining era for the genre was the second half of the 80's, among QUEENSRYCHE's "The Warning" (1984) and (most explicitly) "Rage for Order" (1986) along with FATES WARNING's "Awaken the Guardian" (1986) and "No Exit" (1988) releases. The former evolved on their pure American power metal beginnings, while the latter refined their technical/NWOBHM-influenced metal into more progressive forms. Although producing demos since the mid-80's as MAJESTY, DREAM THEATER's first release came in 1989 with "A Dream and Day Unite". The innovative use of keyboards along with influences from American heavy/power metal and progressive rock produced an original blend which was to be further refined in 1992's "Images and Words", which until this day remains next to "Progressive Metal" definition in any musical dictionary.

Among the pioneers of the genre, but enjoying less success and popularity, were PSYCHOTIC WALTZ and SIEGES EVEN. The former were essentially playing progressive metal as ASLAN in the mid-80's and developed a highly eclectic sound in the 90's. The latter's debut classifies them among the European prog-thrash pioneers but their music evolved to more melodic patterns and heavily influenced by RUSH in the early 90's.

Progressive metal is difficult to further divide in sub-genres but a number of tendencies or movements have been critical to the evolvement of its sound.

Traditional Progressive Metal
The style developed by the pioneers was fully established in the 1990s and includes a range of bands from the two sides of the Atlantic. Good examples in this movement are SAVATAGE, who expanded their heavy metal beginnings with operatic and progressive elements in late 80's/early 90's, while SHADOW GALLERY and SYMPHONY X emerged with a unique sound, each embodying a strong theatrical, symphonic and melodic approach. In Europe, SOUL CAGES continued the legacy of SIEGES EVEN in a more artistic path.

Power-Progressive Metal (American style)
The legacy of RIOT (the counterpart of NWOBHM sound in USA) and the early releases of QUEENSRYCHE and FATES WARNING heavily influenced a number of bands that were to develop a common sound towards the late 80's. Among the well-known representatives of what is called American Power Metal (e.g. VICIOUS RUMORS, HELSTAR), a small number of bands enriched their sound with progressive and epic elements. Probably, the most obvious examples of this movement are CRIMSON GLORY and HEIR APPARENT.

Power-Progressive Metal (European style)
This category includes a broad range of bands that could sound fairly dissimilar to each other but their music is significantly influenced by the European Power Metal (primarily German) bands of the 80's (e.g. HELLOWEEN, RAGE, RUNNING WILD). The earliest examples are probably BLIND GUARDIAN, ANGRA (although Brazilian, their sound is mainly European) and CONCEPTION. Slightly later, VANDEN PLAS, ROYAL HUNT, ELDRITCH and LABYRINTH gave rise to the popularity of the genre in Germany, Denmark and Italy respectively. The symphonic and neo-classical elements (made popular by YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) also found their way through power metal with bands like RHAPSODY OF FIRE and NIGHTWISH, whose style does not qualify as being progressive for many people. Nevertheless their music is quite demanding to play and contains many elements of serious classical composition and form.

Modern Progressive Metal
The second half of the 90's and the early 00's also saw newly formed bands expanding the boundaries of Traditional Progressive Metal via a number of ways: introducing electronic/spacey elements, investing heavily in lyricality and/or syncopation and further rhythmical experimentation. Also the idea of thematically conceptual albums has returned in accord with the practices of the Progressive Metal pioneers. Well-known examples in this category are AYREON, PAIN OF SALVATION and RIVERSIDE.

Dead Air
Katatonia Progressive Metal

Review by javajeff

5 stars My review is for the audio only version purchased from Bandcamp, and I have seen a couple of the videos from this show. The year 2020 has been an unusual time for music, as it required bands to completely change their touring plans and find new ways to produce music with new challenges. Many have decided to create new studio albums while some have decided to stream concerts. Dead Air is a concert without the screaming fans, and the band still manages to create a stellar performance. From the perfect name to the excellent album art, Dead Air just manages to do everything right. The energy level is phenomenal, and the sound quality is fantastic. This is a compilation of the some of the best songs from Katatonia including their latest album City Burials, and a benchmark for the continued level of excellence that they put into every studio album. This is a band that turns everything it touches to gold, and this is another example of how great this band can be. Dead Air sounds tight, different, raw, and powerful while it rocks my earbuds. I have been listening to Katatonia for some time now, and Dead Air may just be an album that I listen to more often than others. It is just that good.

CMX Progressive Metal

Review by Matti
Prog Reviewer

3 stars -- First review for this album -- Alkuteos is the 16th studio album by the Finnish rock band CMX. Since my relationship with the band is very firmly based on the relatively melodic, pop-rock oriented era of the 90's, for me it's slightly hard to see them as Prog Metal. Sure, either "prog" or "metal" is often present to a varying degree, but not necessarily simultaneosly. Have to admit I haven't much followed their later era which is perhaps more metallic in general. According to the frontman A.W. Yrj鋘?this latest album contains more prog nuances than the preceding ones Mesmeria or Seitsentahokas, and more machines were used. There's also a metallic edge to many of the songs, while the prog heard here isn't epic or symphonic in the least.

Yrj鋘? the much respected lyricist and [a published] poet, wants to ask questions such as "What is freedom? What makes the soul sing? Is there such thing as sin?" The first track 'Elementa' sounds quite metallic. 'Paratiisin Eeva' (= Eve of Paradise; the lyrics are of the Devil's point of view) resonates nicely with the classic (I mean 90's) CMX sound. Very good production by the way. The keyboards and programming are by the co-producer Erno Laitinen. Strangely named 'Konx Om Pax' is a highlight with its sonic allutions to the band's "prog magnum opus" Dinosaurus Stereophonicus (2000). 'Verenpuna' (= Blood red) is balanced between melodic pop and hard-edged rock.

'Sulaneet muovisotilaat' (= Melted plastic soldiers) is a relatively calm and moody song with a sophisticated, synth- oriented sound. The next track alternates dynamically between metal and melancholic alt-rock, or something like that, and the likewise 6-minute title track with its Latin-language intro has both metallic angst and the more esoteric approach. This polarized dynamics could be compared to bands such as HAKEN, but don't expect the similar progness. Even though Alkuteos won't enter my list of CMX favourites, especially from the Prog Metal point of view it is a strong late-era album in their large discography.

Long Day Good Night
Fates Warning Progressive Metal

Review by Mebert78

5 stars If Long Day Good Night is Fates Warning's last album as has been suggested in recent interviews (please say it ain't so!), then the progressive metal pioneers are definitely going out on a high note. A very high note, in my opinion. Perhaps even as high as the note hit by Ray Alder in the middle of the band's 1988 single, "Silent Cries." Yes, I know that's pretty high, but it's true. And, frankly, I wouldn't expect anything less from this brilliant band.

This eclectic album -- which is the band's 13th studio release and the longest of their career at over 72 minutes -- has everything its fans have come to love over the course of the group's nearly 40-year career, while still exploring new ground as well. The epic disc kicks off with "The Destination Onward," a reflective rocker that sneaks up on the listener with some soft ambient sounds before eventually exploding into an all-out assault by guitarist Jim Matheos, bassist Joey Vera and drummer Bobby Jarzombek. The band's label Metal Blade describes the song as a "dynamic romp that covers a lot of ground," and I would agree. "It's been long since I've been home; and like a dream these thoughts return to me," Alder delicately sings in the opening lines, setting the tone for a ton of home-themed lyrics throughout Long Day Good Night. In a way, it's fitting since the band could be calling it a day after this album, which means they'll likely be spending a lot more time at home. But Fates' farewell is a subject for another day, because I promised myself I wouldn't cry while writing this review. "The word 'home' came up a lot -- whether missing home or just being comfortable there," Alder said in the band's biography on MetalBlade.com. Whatever the reason, the "home" theme makes for some introspective lyrics that are among the best in the band's catalog.

From there, the varied album continues to bring the goods with the blistering "Shutter World," the catchy headbanger "Alone We Walk," and the almost pop rock "Now Comes the Rain" -- the latter of which, with its water theme, reminded me of Alder's solo album, What the Water Wants, from 2019. Next up is one of my favorite tracks: "The Way Home." For me, it's the album's mountaintop much like "The Light and Shade of Things" is to the band's last album, Theories of Flight, from 2016. The new tune starts almost as a lullaby before transitioning to a heavy ending that has some of the most amazing melodies you'll find from Fates Warning. "Escaping pain, forsaking light; can we find the way home?" Alder intensely belts out on the song's final lines. After that is "Under the Sun," which sees the group utilize a string section for the first time. This little diddy is probably as pop as these prog rockers can get, which of course has caused some mixed reactions online, but I absolutely love it. In fact, I've caught myself singing the song's chorus more than once, so I'm obviously among those who dig it.

The album then picks up the pace again with its first single, "Scars," which to me is classic Fates Warning. It's the kind of song we've heard from the band before, but done as good as they've ever done it. Think of singles from their past albums -- such as "Simple Human" on 2004's FWX or "I Am" on 2013's Darkness in a Different Light -- but even better. Other late highlights are "When Snow Falls," a trippy track that features drums by Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree and The Pineapple Thief, and "The Longest Shadow of the Day," a roller coaster of a song with some intricate solos by the band's touring guitarist Mike Abdow. Lastly, the disc finishes with "The Last Song," an acoustic tune that might be the group's goodbye. "The writer writes his final wrong; this is the last song," the album abruptly ends.

My closing thoughts are that Long Day Good Night has the muscle to rank among the band's greatest efforts -- albeit probably not as high as masterpieces like 1997's A Pleasant Shade of Gray and 2000's Disconnected, which are my all-time favorite albums by Fates Warning. There's a lot to love about this disc, and I'll be treasuring these tunes for decades to come. Kudos to this legendary group for consistently making great music for as long as they have. If there was a Progressive Metal Hall of Fame, a whole wing would be devoted to these guys.

Also, if this is indeed Fates Warning's finale, I'm crossing my fingers and toes for an encore. But if it doesn't happen, I want to thank the band members (past and present) for everything. Their music always feels like home to me. And, as we all know, there's no place like home.

1 stars If at least the songs were good.

I don't mind a change of seasons in an artist career and I welcomed Rush, Yes, Aimee Mann, The Stranglers, Green Day or even Gentle Giant. True, Gentle Giant's commercial albums are not that bad (if you like Men at Work). But for my beloved Queensrche, it did not go well. Here goes.

On Hear In the now Frontier, 'rche sounds like a typical 1997 alt-band. Unfortunately, not the sophisticated-Radiohead-type but more like the Collective Soul- Third Eye Blind- Tonic- Matchbox 20 type. You know, really easily forgotten generic band. No kidding, I wanted to push skip on almost every song. And I do not feel relieved by that. I love the guys. I know they had bills to pay and kids to send to private schools, but these songs feel uninspired, tired and out of joy. And deGarmo was still in the band! Sheesh! At least they tried something new, Ac/Dc has served the same p鈚?for all their career.

A true change of scenery, like ordering lacquered duck and being served fish sticks.

And by the way, who fondly remembers Collective Soul?

That's right: nobody.

5 stars Corny or sublime?

The best way is to listen. One thing for sure, Queensrche really embodied an air-du-temps witht this EP. This lives, breathes and headbangs 1983, mullet and Export A cigarettes included. Totally Beavis and Butthead (who?!) music, perfect for playing Gorgar pinball while acting tough at the local arcade.

Lyrics like 'There is no escape!' will induce cringing in your loved one, screaming to turn it off or breaking up. But Tate's voice is hypnotic, compelling, making you lipsync like a maniac for the joy of fans like you. Because there is a LOT of closet Queensrche fans. Their sound was irresistible: either you clench your fists in disgust or delight. My wife hates it with a passion, it's like a sitting in a dentist chair for her.

The Iron Maiden reference is inevitable but I also hear a lot of Rush, especially in Nightrider. While Maiden aims toward horror, the science-fiction theme of Queensrche always appealed more to me.

It's a geek paradise: fantasy/sci-fi lyrics, dual guitars, high pitched vocals (the best in the buisness at the time) and big rolls on the toms. And make sure to watch the video of Queen of the Reich, one of the most craptacularesque videos ever made; you're in for a fantastically funny time.

50% leather, 50% rock and 50% testosterone.

Dream Theater Progressive Metal

Review by dougmcauliffe

3 stars Overall, this is a solid live album featuring the entirety of Dream Theaters 1999 classic "Scenes From a Memory," as well as an assortment of tracks from their 2019 release "Distance Over Time," finished off with a couple stragglers from their two last albums with Portnoy. The sound quality is really nice, balanced and punchy, there's some pitch correction on the vocals in spots, but it mostly sounds good enough to me for a guy whose pushing 60. I find the only times the vocals kind of irk me are when James Labrie improvises or deviates from the original melody or delivery which tends to lead to him over singing. Everyone else is 100% on the dot, and it's especially nice to hear some John Myung in the mix. I actually saw them on this tour and unfortunately, I found the concert mix to be way too loud and muddy to really enjoy. I was also much more of a casual Dream Theater fan at the time, so the first set didn't do it for me. So with that said it's nice to be able to appreciate this tour and setlist more with this live release. For the actual songs in the set, I think they chose most the best tracks from Distance Over Time with my favorites here being "Pale Blue Dot," and "Barstool Warrior." One of the bonus tracks "At Wits End," is another super solid cut, if I could chose one more song to throw into the set from Distance Over Time i'd probably chose S2N which is a favorite of mine. We also get an official live version of Nightmare to Remember finally, I enjoy this version a lot because it cuts out the goofy Mike Portnoy "growl" vocals found in the latter half of the song. Some of my favorite metal bands use harsh vocals, but Mike Portnoy uhhh..... doesn't got it. Mangini and Rudess really shine on this track adding some new and fresh flourishes on top of the already well established parts found on the studio version. The other non-Scenes or Distance Over Time cut is In The Presence of Enemies Part 1 off Systematic Chaos which is another track I'm a big fan of. James Labrie does a really fine job on this track as it seems to be a comfortable fit for his current range. Being a little picky, I would've liked to have seen maybe one more album cut from their discography make the setlist as this show only covers 4 out of their 14 studio albums. As for the second set, they play all of Scenes From a Memory and overall, it's just a solid and energetic performance of an album many of us here love. I find that Jordan Rudess incorporates some new sounds he's picked up over the years to really expand on some of his original parts. I see this as a nice change-up and alternative version of the album that I can see myself reaching for and coming back to. Overall, if you're a fan of both Dream Theater new and old, this album is certainly worth checking out. This likely isn't going to go down as one of their best live releases since they more or less stick to their guns and don't really stretch their legs too far outside of the studio versions. But it's good to finally hear some of these Distance Over Time songs live as well as Nightmare to Remember.

I'm somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, today I'll give it a strong 3 stars. Fans like myself will enjoy this release, check it out.

5 stars True Lost Gem.

Okay, if one expression is overused on the Net it's truly 珷lost gem牷. It seems they are everywhere these days. Phew, that been said, I never heard of Queensrche on MTv past 1991. It seemed they vanished after their big Empire moment, or maybe it's just Nirvana that took all the spotlight, leaving scraps of attention to everything else but grunge? I vote for the latter. A true overlooked record that fell in the cracks of the sofa of time.

I'm so glad I took the time to drench into Promised Land; we ecounter a much more softer side of the band. I say softer but, darker is perhaps a more suitable word. Call it 珷sophisticated Dark? growling bass, haunting saxophone (!), acoustic guitars, grand piano (!), whispers of conscience and melancholic lyrics. Although 'rche has never been wedding music, the sadness (or desperation) is obviously deeper, the pain is skin deep. I'm also surprised how much quality songs is packed in this, perhaps one or two filler songs can be found (maybe Global Mind or One More Time).

Promised Land does not disappoint: sophisticated, charcoal matte metal with a slick urban feel, something to listen in your car at midnight, cruising in the city.

You've never heard of it? Good. Now enjoy.

5 stars I really enjoyed this album. I saw this band at a few music fests in their home town and other near cities in Mexico back in the days (2010's) when we attended the same university and they really showed a ton of energy on their live performances. As for this record, it is well recorded while keeping an organic feel. In my opinion, it is well balanced and is not hard to listen to in a single sitting. My personal favs are Triste Regresi髇 and El Punto Cr韙ico. They changed vocalist and I think it's a good choice. Great work by these guys!

— First review of this album —
4 stars Familiar, Comfortable, yet innovative.

This is a very interesting proposition from Aly. I've been waiting for this album for a long time now, but back when I heard this album was going to be sung in Nahuatl ( a Mexican Native Language) I didn't knew what to expect... well... for sure I didn't expect this.

Except from the fact that the lyrics are sung in Nahuatl, this album is everything you know, everything you have heard, it is your comfort zone, it brings you home, right where you want to be... except not. As you listen, you think you know exactly were the composition is going and where it's coming from... from David Gilmour to Steve Vai, with hints of Yes, IQ, Supertramp, Metallica even Manuel M. Ponce... I'm sure you'll notice your own favorites in here without being able to finally pinpoint where everything is coming from. This feeling I'm talking about comes from Aly's ability in composition and conceptualization to take what he loves of several influences and make something totally new.

Being an Aly album you'd expect to hear that guitar virtuosity that characterizes him everywhere, but no... virtuosity is only displayed where it's needed which makes those passages more enjoyable rather having a full song without any spaces between notes.

The vocals on this album are great. One singer imposes herself right away, the other has a sweetness in her voice that makes the complexity of nahuatl phonetics really mellow.

This is a very enjoyable album from start to finish, a bit addictive for me I must say, I find myself playing it over and over again, looking for more details, those details make this a great album.

Pain Of Salvation Progressive Metal

Review by Devolvator

4 stars Actually "Pain of Symphony". How can you describe the emotions you hear? It's as if the crumbly potatoes have learned to roar like an old lion. Let's get serious now! They still have courage and good shape, despite the fact that the group is 31 years old! Oh gods, why do they still exist? After all, everything has already been written and played 15-20 years ago! However, there is something to listen to, although we understand the lack of novelty. But let's be honest: after all, people should do something if they still have energy and talent! And I have no moral right to criticize them for their habit of writing records. There is still a lot of anger and unbroken teeth in Daniel Gildenl鰓, but this anger is more theatrical than not. The voice has undoubtedly become quieter, and this fact is carefully hidden by expensive mixing. Among the shortcomings: the integrity of the songs is very lame, and sometimes there is a feeling that the musicians are trying to outmatch themselves, which is in vain. However, melodicism has never been a strong point of POS. There is a feeling as if Opeth of the early 2000s strongly "simulate" Gentle Giant, only with the addition of flamenco and synthesizers. Delighted with the sublime sadness of Daniel's voice and the still unforgotten feeling of flight, which is so vividly revealed in the composition titled "Wait". Although the drums still run chaotically and randomly (which POS has always had), this is their trademark, but this is for "big fans". In general, the melody of the song is original and seems to emerge from various musical moves together. "Keen To a Fault" is also pleasantly drawn into a whirlwind of sounds, where you can recognize the old battle vocal cry from Gildenl鰓, as if rushing from the heights. Together with the characteristic "behindhand" drums. This whole atmosphere is permeated with atypical acoustic guitars at the ready with a heavy component. And the alternative "smash-hit" titled "Panther", in which Dan deftly gets involved in heavy hip-hop, diluting it with something similar to the work of the Norwegian Gazpacho. Not to say that this is a successful opus, but it is easily recognized and listened to in one breath. It is not boring. Well, and the uncompromising "Species", where the young brutal Pain Of Salvation suddenly hits the ears, with powerful screens of depressing and falling overloads of guitars. Yes, the melody is absent in the album as a class, but there are no boring and mediocre tracks. They put everything on the line for the originality of the moves, realizing that they apparently had nothing more to bet on. Perhaps these old dogs are no longer so strong and evil, but they are too smart and resourceful to make it clear to the listeners. The technical side is perfect. If you are not afraid to constantly switch your consciousness from one move to another, then listen to this album in full. And not an ounce of fatigue, although this feeling is more likely the result of many hours of studio work, rather than a suddenly opened "second wind". Do you want the truth?! Pain Of Salvation's music is still complex, heavy and non-trivial, just like before! It's just that now the listeners need to find the edges of the musicians' talents themselves, and not receive it "on a silver platter", as in the 2000s. This may be the best Neo-Progressive album, but only if you want to.
